Curriculum Adoption - IG Policy: IG First Reading: 12/4/01 Second Reading: 12/17/01 Curriculum Adoption
The School Committee will rely on its professional staff to design and implement instructional programs and courses of study that will forward the educational goals of the school system. The Superintendent will have the authority to approve new programs and courses of study after they have been thoroughly studied and found to support established educational goals. The Committee will be informed of all new courses and revisions to curriculum. It will receive reports on changes under consideration.
The Committee will only consider and officially adopt new programs and courses when they constitute a substantive alteration in instructional content or approach. The Committee will adopt such changes to existing curriculum as proposed by the Superintendent only after receiving said recommendations and discussing them at a regularly posted meeting of the Committee at least 14 days prior to adoption.
Each year the Superintendent shall make a report to the Committee on the results of any standardized testing or other evaluation method that pertains to the effectiveness of any pre-existing curriculum programs as well as improvements in academic performance attributed to newly implemented programs. The Committee will utilize this information in considering new curriculum proposals.
