Regional School Building Subcommitte Notes
Sites for New School Continue to the be Focus
06/08/2004
At its last meeting, the School Building Subcommittee continued to review sites between the center of Essex and the center of Manchester. Following the site walk of several sites along School Street/Southern Avenue at its last meeting, the Committee walked the Lincoln Street high school site and the site of the Memorial School. (The Committee is charged with evaluating the Lincoln Street site as well as other, new sites.) They returned indoors for a lively discussion about a variety of ways to use the full land area in that location as well as the plans for upgrading the district’s two elementary schools.
The group reviewed the School District’s requirements for athletic fields, using the analysis of needs and sites done a year ago as a starting point. The needs of the community programs, with particular attention to the lack of sufficient available community fields, were also discussed.
The Committee created a tool to compare the relative merits and costs of different sites on an overview basis. In addition to the ability of a site to meet academic, athletic and extracurricular program needs, the group discussed the costs of site acquisition and development, infrastructure issues, and on-going operational expenses at a variety of locations. Key issues and impediments for each site were identified preliminarily and Committee members were assigned to investigate these further.
NEXT MEETING: Tuesday, June 22th 7:30 p.m. at the Regional High School, Rm. 126.
FOCUS: Review of topographic maps of the Southern Avenue/School Street corridor
Discussion of contract services needed
