Regional School Building Subcommitte Notes Special Town Meetings in Essex and Manchester
2/3/2006
Town Meetings During the first full week in February, both Essex and Manchester will hold Special Town Meetings. The focus for both meetings will be budget articles that enable the proposal for a new Middle and High School to go forward. Essex - Wednesday, February 8th at 7:30 p.m.
Manchester - Thursday, February 9th at 7:00 p.m. The Special Town meetings are the culmination of two years of work by the School Committee and its School Building Subcommittee to solve the significant facilities’ problems at the current Middle and High School. During the last two years, the SBC held over 50 public meetings, reviewing prior engineering studies of the current building, identifying and investigating the costs and feasibility of 18 possible sites in the Southern Avenue/School Street corridor (including a number of on-site inspections) and finally recommending that a new building be built at the current site on Lincoln
Street, with athletic fields on the south side of Lincoln Street and in Essex.
Given the urgent need for the facility and sharply increasing construction costs, both the Essex and Manchester Finance Committees and Boards of Selectman have expressed their strong support for the proposal that will be presented in detail at the Special Town Meetings.
The School Building Project is the first major educational building project that has taken place in either town in over 40 years. Given the project’s size and importance and because they believe the project is crucial to the future of both communities, the School Committee and Building Subcommittee want to assure that all interested citizen’s have the opportunity to get their questions answered and their ideas and concerns heard.
Town Hall Office Hours For citizens who were unable to attend the three Open Houses that took place in the last two weeks, members of the School Committee and Building Subcommittee will be available at the Essex Town Library on Tuesdays from 6-7 p.m. and Wednesdays from 1-2 p.m. The Committee members will also be available at the Manchester Town Hall on Wednesdays, from 10-11 a.m. and Thursdays from 7-8 p.m.
